Rent Choice

Supporting Key Workers, the heart and soul of our community

The Northern Territory Labor Government is supporting workers with the cost of living by extending Rent Choice for another year through a $3 million investment in Budget 2024. With broader eligibility criteria, and increased accessibility for Territorians, together we will achieve more in 2024!

Venture - Rent Choice on Biteable.

You choose the home, we’ll provide a rent subsidy

Rent Choice was initially established in 2021 in response to rising rents and extreme difficulties faced by NT families when trying to find a home that was affordable, particularly Key Workers, the heart and soul of our community and the lifeblood of our economy. It is unique in that it enables eligible key workers to source their own private rental housing and receive a rental subsidy of up to $12,000 over twelve months, paid directly to their licensed Real Estate Agency or registered Community Housing Provider each month.

Rent Choice is designed and delivered by Venture Housing, and has supported hundreds of Territory Key Workers and their families by:

  • Assisting with upfront costs, relieving rental stress while they established their new home
  • Enabling Key Workers to remain in their rental home where they may otherwise have considered leaving their home, community or the NT
  • Enabling Key Workers to have more choice when looking for an affordable home that meets their needs.

And has achieved broader objectives by:

  • Significantly increasing the ability of low to moderate income key workers in the target industries to access private rental housing that is affordable and available.
  • Addressing the housing affordability barriers preventing key workers from joining the NT workforce or having an affordable place to live and settle and access or retain a job.
  • Supporting local businesses to increase workforce capacity and access the required skills and labour.
  • Stimulating the Northern Territory economy and essential service system by supporting local businesses to increase productivity and lower business operating costs.
  • Keeping key workers in local businesses and communities, helping to ensure those communities remain places where people want to live and work, with the infrastructure, services, leisure and lifestyle activities they need to thrive.
Happy couple and a baby smiling
