About Rent Choice Regional
You choose the home, we’ll provide a rent subsidy
In December 2021 The Northern Territory Government announced its investment of $3 million in a rental subsidy scheme, designed and delivered by Venture Housing Company, aimed at relieving rental stress for eligible Key Workers working in priority industries in the NT.
Investment in this Affordable Housing solution couldn’t have come at a better time; as rents continue to rise and more NT families are experiencing extreme difficulties finding a home that is affordable – particularly Key Workers, the heart and soul of our community, and the lifeblood of our economy.
After successful implementation across the NT, applications for the Rent Choice private rental subsidy scheme were paused in September 2022 due to all funds having been committed at that time. Due to the nature of the scheme’s current eligibility review assessment requirements, funds have gradually returned to the pool as participants who are no longer eligible, exit the scheme.
On the 1st March 2023, Venture Housing opened applications to commit all remaining Rent Choice funds with a re-focussed campaign titled Rent Choice – Regional in order to deliver increased impact in regional areas.
On the 1st June 2023 we expanded Rent Choice Regional to include eligible key workers in the following locations;
- Darwin
- Palmerston
- Katherine
- Tennant Creek
- Alice Springs
Subsidies will be granted for a maximum of six months capped at $6,000, with no eligibility review requirement.
Applications closed on the 31st August 2023.
Rent Choice Regional enabled eligible key workers to;
- receive a rental subsidy of a max. $6,000 for up to six months, depending upon their household size and the rental location.
- source their own private rental accommodation through a licensed Real Estate Agent
- apply the subsidy payments to a lease extension through a licensed Real Estate Agent
